Kim Kronzer O'Brien
This photo was taken at Booked Up, Larry McMurtry's Archer City, Texas bookstore, which sadly no longer exists. On the visit, we were lucky enough to spot Larry. We didn't bother him, though. Pretty sure that's why we received the unexplained 20% discount on the books we bought.

Bio

Growing up in Houston, Texas, Kim was lucky to have a mother whose best friends owned a bookstore. While the adults visited over coffee, she was free to wander at will. As a result, any place with books has always felt like home. In elementary school, she read every orange-covered biography in the Bunker Hill Elementary School library. In junior high, she had a regular column in her church newsletter. Written from the point of view of a mouse who lived in the church's library and apparently did a lot of late-night reading, she reviewed children's books.

College took her to Newcomb College/Tulane University in New Orleans, a city that still ranks amongst her favorite places on the planet. As an American Studies major, she studied favorite authors such as Tennessee Williams, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Robert Penn Warren. After graduation, a long-held desire to live in Austin and a passion for public policy led her to graduate studies at the University of Texas. A career in local and state government followed.

Somewhere along the way, she felt a pull to write something more creative than government reports. Blessed to be in a town with an active writers organization, she started taking classes. Craft How-To’s at first, then workshops taught by excellent authors and mentors like Thomas Hughes, Debra Dean, and Laura Lippman.

Kim is currently working on a novel about a recently-widowed woman who's learning to negotiate the world on her own. Previous manuscripts have been recognized as finalists in the Colorado Gold Rush Literary Award Contest and the Faulkner-Wisdom Creative Writing Competition. Crescent City, a World War II tale set in New Orleans, took first place in the 2018 Pacific Northwest Writers Association Literary Contest. Her writing has been published in the Concho River Review and the Bear River Review.
